چکیده
The impact of discharged treated brewery effluent stream on the microbial andphysicochemical qualities Ikpoba River which is serving as a receptacle for treatedwastewater was investigated. Serial dilution, pour plate and multiple tube technique wereemployed in evaluating culturable diversity water samples thetreated wastewater. physicochemical attributes freshwater effluentsamples were ascertained using titrimetric spectrophotometric procedures. meanheterotrophic bacterial counts upstream ranged from 3.7 ×102cfu/ml ± 2.1 to 0. 6 × 102 cfu/ml 2. mean heterotrophic fungal watersamples obtained at point discharge 0.7×103 6.6 9.7 103cfu/ml 6.1. total coliform recorded thedownstream sampling 2 MPN/105 ml 5 ml. E. colicounts wastewater varied 4 Theobserved differences statisticallysignificant (P<0.05). Seven four isolates characterized andtentatively identified; Proteus vulgaris, Bacillus cereus, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Escherichiacoli, Streptococcus sp., Pseudomonas Enterobacter aerogenes, Saccharomycescerevisiae, Candida tropicalis, Penicillium sp. Aspergillus niger. pH, turbidityand conductivity respective 5.63±0.05 6.78±0.05, 4.1 NTU±0.21 6.81 NTU ±0.55 3.3 ?s/cm ±0.25 73.3 ±6.56 respectively. Assessment of the Physicochemical and Microbiological Qualities of Swimming Pools in Selected Hotels in Osogbo
Water is used for various human activities such as drinking, bathing, washing and recreation. The physicochemical as well as microbiological qualities of water samples collected over a period of ten months from five swimming pools in five randomly-selected hotels in Osogbo metropolis, Southwestern Nigeria were assessed. The collection of the fifty water samples spanned the dry and rainy seasons...
متن کاملCharacterisation of the physicochemical qualities of a typical rural-based river: ecological and public health implications
The physicochemical qualities of a typical rural-based river were assessed over a 12-month period from August 2010 to July 2011 spanning the spring, summer, autumn and winter seasons. Water samples were collected from six sampling sites along Tyume River and analysed for total nitrogen, orthophosphate, biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen (DO), electrical conductiv...
متن کاملPhysicochemical Characteristics and Biodegradation of Pharmaceutical Effluent
Pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCPs) industries suffer inadequate effluent treatment due to the presence of recalcitrant substances, insufficient carbon source and nutrients. Biodegradation is the ability of microorganisms to metabolize pollutants in soil, sediment and water environment. There is great awareness in the positive impact that microorganisms play in protecting environm...

During the last two decades the brewing industry has shown increasing awareness for environmental protection and the need of sustainable production processes. Implementation of ISO 14001 certification and more stringent environmental legislation have been important drivers for the brewing industry to invest in biological effluent treatment. The role of biological effluent treatment is discussed...
متن کاملEvaluation of the microbiological quality of wastewater effluent-irrigated maize
Background and Aim: Water crisis in many regions of the world especially arid and semi-arid areas such as Iran, is an important obstacle for socioeconomic development and food security. Under such circumstances, wastewater reuse in agriculture can be regarded an important alternative water source. However, treated wastewater may contain some types of pathogenic microorganisms which can threaten...
